Over-The-Line:The Emergence of Sport into a Cult Event in San Diego
Cultures and subcultures affect the development and evolution of sports and games. In beach-oriented communities such as San Diego, location and lifestyle often affect the development of sports.Over-The-Line, a bat and ball game that emerged as a unique sport on the sandy beaches of San Diego, slowly evolved into an iconic social and sporting event in this large metropolitan city. This paper tracks the historical and social development of Over-The-Line from its beach beginnings into an annual event that attracts teams and players from all over the world to the OMBAC World Championship Over-The-Line Tournament held each July for the past 59 years.
