2013 International Congress for Leisure Sports and Recreation
This study examines the role of sport in Singapore through tracing the development of sports in Singapore and the major policies and programmes developed by the state agencies.Beyond leisure and recreation, sport is seen as a medium for social cohesion and nation-building.Beginning with a Sports for All policy in the early years of nationhood, the republic has implemented sport policies for the pursuit of sports excellence and for the development of the sports industry. These policies and the rationale behind them indicate that sport play a greater and important role in the development of the city state.Nevertheless, the push towards sports for the masses is ever present, even as Singapore continues to mature as a developed nation.
