THE FUTURE OF RECREATION AND LEISURE EDUCATION IN AFRICA
Recreation and leisure opportunities abound across the continent of Africa in different setting ranging from traditional to classical forms. The early objectives of traditional games were basically to provide relaxation, entertainment and moral education, but currently the focus has shifted to tourism and wealth creation.Recreation and leisure education is still a virgin area of study as most countries in Africa have not been able to utilize recreation to solve national challenges despite the huge attraction tourism and recreation receives. This is occasioned by the fact that in most African countries recreation education is not a course of study in universities in degree and sub degree levels. This paper highlighted traditional and modern recreational sports culture found in countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, Mali, Tanzania, Egypt, Togo, Central Africa Republic, Rwanda and Zambia;current recreation attraction of interest to prospective investor, the need for programme instruction to meet the manpower demand of this growing industry, and career prospect for trainees. The future of recreation and leisure education is bright in Africa, to achieve the full potential;attention should be directed to youth mass participation through recreation social networking. This will help to combat exclusion and foster national and world peace.
