The Adaptation of Shakespeares Plays in British Childrens Literature(1807-1901)
The adaptation of Shakespeares plays in British childrens literature has a long history and has scored fruitful achievements; however, it hasnt gained the attention it deserves. Based on the analyses of current research status home and abroad about the field, this paper demonstrates the importance, the necessity and the feasibility of Shakespeares play adaptation in British childrens literature, especially the period from 1807 to 1901, the golden age of British childrens literature. Then, with close reading of classical adaptation works under the lens of adaptation theory, ethical literary criticism and New Historicism, it puts forward a systematic research plan for the adaptation of Shakespeares plays in British childrens literature (1807-1901), which includes the adaptation history, the significance of the adaptation, and the interpretation of selected works. Finally, the paper concludes with summarizing the theoretical and practical significance of the research and calls for appropriate attention to this oblivious field.
