Revolt against Despair-Reflections on Decadence in Lu Xuns Wild Grass

As Lu Xuns poems Wild Grass began to appear in magazine from late 1924, readers sensed their aesthetic appeal but were also troubled by the unfamiliarity and strange imagery. The 23-poem collection instantly drew criticism for its negativity, pessimism, darkness, despair and nihilism as well as comments on the beauty of its language and ambiguity of meaning. This paper intends to explore the spirit of revolt underneath the decadence through the detailed analysis of Tremors of Degradation, a lesser known but interesting piece in Wild Grass, offering a differentiated analysis of the complexity of the collection.
