Penelopes Web and Mary Cowden Clarkes Shakespearean YoungAdolescent Heroines

  This papercategorizes and interprets characters in Mary Cowden Clarkes The Girlhood of Shakespeares Heroines who are closely related to the figures and tales of Greek and Roman Mythology: the Demure(Galatea,Griselda and Syrinx),the Shrew(Amazons,Medusa and Juno)and the Predators(Mercury,Argus and Jove).Then through detailed analysis of these characters,it reveals theethical codes for Victorian women as well asClarkes attitude toward these codes,and finally with the mythical allusion of Penelopes Web it summarisesthe important role the elements of Greek and Roman mythology plays in educating Victorian women in an entertaining way.
