Stance Adverbials in Chinese English Learners Theses: A Difficulty for L2 Academic Writers

  This study explores the stance adverbial(SA)in lexico-grammatical level used in 30 Chinese English learners MA theses in comparison with those in 30 native speakers MA theses by means of a corpus approach.With a theoretical framework of SA based on Systemic Functional Grammars Mood system(Halliday & Matthiessen,2004)and Appraisal theory(Martin & White,2005),this study presents a data-based,pedagogically oriented investigation of the features of SA in the learner corpus with an aim to reveal the complexity and difficulty of the use of lexici-grammatical resources.It finds that Chinese English learners use more SA in academic writing than the native speakers,and there is divergence in their use of specific categories.The paper analyzes the divergence in the corpora with a further discussion on the authorial stance and the writer-reader interaction.
