The Act of Reading in Thomas Pynchons The Crying of Lot 49

Thomas Pynchon in his The Crying of Lot 49 directs readers attention to the very act of reading and thereby to the generation of literary meanings through the exchange among the author, the text and the reader. In this triangular exchange, the reader interacts with the narrative form, makes judgment of it,and reflects on his own judgment. This interactive process makes him more attentive to the potentiality of literary meaning and hermeneutic multiplicity.
