The Empire Anxiety in John Keats s The Eve of St.Agnes
As the representative poet of 19th British Romantic era,John Keats has won his posthumous fame among the later poets as well as the mass readers.Though seemingly quite elusive from politics,John Keats expresses his own concern for British Empire in terms of anxiety that is typically illustrated in his narrative,The Eve of St.Agnes.Such an anxiety is over splitting trend from Scotland towards England in view of empire union and the threatening power from the orient countries as the Other, the core concept and main concern proposed and expressed by Said, which is further complemented by Nigel Leask in the aspect of self-retrospection.Freudian insight into the conflict between the individual and civilization provides quite a unique perspective in understanding such anxiety. Also, the historical and social circumstances are involved in as the central reference rather than the background information.
