An adaptive distance protection of wind farms connected using natural frequency and characteristic frequency
Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) usually operates at variable speed and constant frequency mode in normal conditions, the stator current frequency is related with pre-fault generator speed when three-phase fault happens, if the pre-fault generator speed is non-rated value, the fault current frequency deviates 50Hz. Therefore, the traditional distance protection based on rated power frequency will be mal-operated. Based on this, this paper analyzes the frequency components of the fault current using Prony algorithm, and then presents an adaptive distance protection which combined the natural frequency and the characteristic frequency for the grid connected wind farms, the protection adjusts the round impedance characteristic adaptively with pre-fault generator speed. PSCAD simulation results show that the principle has good performance, it can correctly judge line faults, thus effectively improves the corrective action of the relay protection with wind farms.
