Study of Transformer Differential Protection Based on Self-adaptive Biased Characteristic Curve

For the conventional biased characteristic differential criterion based on a fixed predetermined characteristic curve, it is difficult to improve both reliability and sensitivity of transformer differential protection. To solve this problem, the comparative analysis of operation trajectories of protection is conducted in this paper. According to the differences among operation trajectories under various operating conditions, a novel self-adaptive protection scheme is presented. The new scheme adopts the means of variable characteristics, utilizing different characteristic curves to cope with different operation conditions. Simulation tests results based on RTDS show that the proposed scheme provides a high sensitivity for internal faults, while retaining a high reliability for all external faults. Protection apparatuses based on the proposed scheme have been developed and performed well in actual.
