Design and Evaluation of Differentiated Lightning Protection Countermeasures for Pudong 10 kV Distribution Lines

  Due to the dominated position of 10 kV distribution lines taken in lightning outage rate of Pudong power grid operation experiences and the increasing demand for the stability of power supply, it is important to improve the lightning performance of 10 kV distribution lines. In this paper, the lightning outage rate of typical 10 kV distribution lines with covered conductors due to lightning strokes in Pudong power grid is analysed based on ATP-EMTP and the method recommended by IEEE and Chinese Standards, the effects of typical single lightning protection countermeasures are analysed and compared. Refer to the differentiated lightning protection principles recently proposed by China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI) for transmission lines, the differentiated lightning protection contermeasures for Pudong 10 kV Distribution Lines are proposed and compared. The result show that three proposed differentiated lightning protection countermeasures based on back-up type, leading type and economical type could satisfy the requirements of lightning withstand performance under different conditions.
