How Small Scale Basaltic Volcanic Systems Behave:A Geochemical Perspective
Small-scale basaltic magmatic systems are the most widespread manifestation of magmatic activity of planet Earth and occur in all of the major tectonic environments; they are characteristically expressed at the Earths surface as fields of small monogenetic cones. Although the compositions of monogenetic volcanoes in volcano fields are dominantly basaltic there is wide variation within this spectrum from strongly silica-undersaturated nephelinites through basanites and alkali basalts to subalkaline transitional and tholeiitic basalts.
