Effect of Cu on the Mechanical Properties of High Manganese Steel for Cryogenic Application
The effect of Cu addition on the mechanical properties was investigated in a high manganese steel for cryogenic application.As-rolled and solid solution heated samples were studied by analysis of their microstructures and mechanical properties obtained in uniaxial tensile tests and Charpy impact tests at -196℃.The addition of Cu was found to decrease the strain-hardening rate of steel in both states. However, slight decrease of ultimate tensile strength was only found in steel of solid solution state. For the as-rolled state with increasing Cu composition, the ultimate tensile strength was almost unaffected, while its yield strength increased. The impact absorbed energy at -196℃ was improved by the addition of Cu and reached maximum when copper content is 0.5wt%.The growth of toughness was related to the suppression of martensite transformation resulting from the increasing stacking fault energy(SFE).
