Ferrite Transformation and Mechanical Properties of Medium Manganese Steels

Microstructure evolution and change in mechanical properties in 4Mn-0.1C(-2Si) and 5Mn-0.1C(-2Si) medium manganese steels were studied. It was found that austenite to ferrite transformation of the medium Mn steels was quite slow and they showed mostly martensitic microstructures even after slow cooling from austenite. On the other hand, deformation of austenite greatly accelerated the ferrite transformation to result in ferrite and martensite dual phase (DP) structures. The 4Mn-0.1C steel having the DP structure showed good mechanical properties in tensile test, with tensile strength of 1180 MPa and total elongation of 22%.Intercritical annealing in ferrite and austenite two-phase region stabilized some portion of austenite at room temperature.
