Unusual Grain Refinement Effect on the Tensile Properties and Twinning Behavior of High-carbon Fe-Mn-C TWIP Steel
The effect of grain size on the tensile deformation behavior of a high-carbon Fe-Mn-C TWIP steel was investigated by tensile tests and microscopic observations. It is demonstrated that the strength and ductility of the steel increase simultaneously with decreasing grain size,an unusual result as compared with the previous results obtained in low-medium carbon TWIP steels.Microscopic observations show that although deformation twinning is suppressed in the fine-grained sample at the early stages of straining, the formation of deformation twins becomes more prevalent in the fine-grained than in the coarse-grained samples at high strain levels.Furthermore, the thicknesses of individual twins and twin bundles decrease with decreasing grain size. The gradual and persistent formation of thinner twin structures is supposed to be responsible for the unusual effect of grain refinement on the tensile properties in fine-grained samples.
