Influence of the Manganese Content on the Hot Ductility Behavior of High Manganese Steels within the System Fe-Mn-C

Hot ductility is a parameter to determine the susceptibility to hot cracking during bending and straightening in a continuous casting machine (CC).The class of fully austenitic high manganese TRIP and TWIP steels shows in comparison to ferritic steel grades lower ductility values between Tliq and 700℃.To identify the mechanisms for poor ductility, four steel grades with varying manganese contents were investigated,in an in situ hot tensile testing machine.A decrease of the hot ductility by increasing the manganese content is identifiable.Especially at 1000 ℃ where regularly the bending and straightening processof the strand begins,a strong dependency between the Mn content and ductility is present. The fracture surface is besides the manganese content mainly influenced by the testing temperature.
