Study on Reaction Behavior between Medium Manganese Steel and Molten Slag

The experiments on reaction between medium Mn steel and molten Ladle furnace refining slag were carried out at 1873K.Manganese content in medium Mn steel would decrease while MnO content in refining slag would increase due to reaction(2Mn+(SiO2)==2(MnO)+Si) happened at the interface between the liquid steel and the molten slag. The effect of basicity (w(CaO)/w(SiO2)),Al2O3 and CaF2 content in refining slag on the reaction was investigated. After 60 minutes slag/steel reaction,MnO content in the slag decreased from 0.75% to 0.48%,when the basicity of the slag increased from 4 to 6.While,MnO content in the slag increased from 0.33% to 0.58% and 0.44% to 0.81% when Al2O3 content and CaF2 content in the slag increased from 20% to 30% and 2% to 4%,respectively.It can be seen form the result that increase of the slag basicity would hinder the reaction, contrarily, increase of Al2O3 content and CaF2 content would be good for the reaction. And effect of CaF2 in the slag on the reaction was greater than that of Al2O3 in the slag.Although MnO content in the slag increased due to the reaction, the variation amount of MnO was small and could be ignored. So,it was suggested that it was feasible to apply common slag in secondary refining.
