The Influence of Rolling Reduction on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Cold-rolled Medium-Mn Steel

The medium-Mn steel (Fe-0.1C-5Mn) was cold-rolled with different reduction and the evolution of microstructure and mechanical properties during cold rolling was investigated. The microstructure was characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM),transmission electron microscopy (TEM),electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD).The volume fraction of retained austenite in the steel was determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The mechanical properties of the cold-rolled steel were measured by uniaxial tensile tests. It was found that the main changes for the lamellar duplex ferrite and austenite steel during cold rolling were as followed: the ferrite grain orientation rotated to the rolling direction, the austenite transformed to martensite and the lamella thickness decreased. With increasing cold rolling reduction, the yield strength and tensile strength increased and the total elongation and uniform elongation decreased rapidly.During the cold rolling process, the dislocation density increased and the austenite transformed to martensite which resulted in the increasing of strength.Due to the TRIP effect, plasticity and product of tensile strength to total elongation decreased rapidly as the fraction of retained austenite decreased.
