FEM Parametric Study of Chain-die Formed U-channel AHSS Products

With the increasing demand of reducing the body weight of vehicles, the utilization of advanced high strength steel has been increased dramatically during the past few decades. However, due to higher yield strength and less ductility,AHSS products are harder to manufacture. To cope with this situation, the chain-die forming method is developed. In this paper, the sensitivity of the chain-die formed U-channel products geometric parameters such as average flange angle and variation of the flange angle along the longitudinal direction are investigated through finite element analysis the selected five controllable variables used in the simulations are material strength, sheet metal thickness, vertical forming gap, variation of virtual roll radius and maximum wear. The results show that the vertical forming gap has the most significant impact on the average flange angle.Meanwhile, variation of virtual roll radius has a dominant effect on the variation of the flange angle along the longitudinal direction.
