Hot-Dip Galvanizing Concepts of Advanced High Strength Steels for Automotive Application
Modern automotive concepts inquire an enhanced level of passenger safety in combination with a reduced body-in-white weight.In order to serve these needs and to meet the fuel efficiency and the carbon emission targets advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) offer great application potential.Due to their mechanical properties dual-phase (DP) and transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steels are excellent solutions for structural automobile parts.In order to enlarge the field of application for customers,new steel concepts providing a combination of higher strength and ductility compared to the 1st Generation of AHSS are being developed.However,cost-effective hot-dip galvanizing of steel concepts alloyed with Mn,Si,Al,or Cr is challenging due to intrinsic surface coverage of compact oxide layers during continuous annealing prior to hot-dipping.In close cooperation between the thyssenkrupp Steel Europe (tkSE)R&D department and TAGAL-TKAS Auto Steel Company Ltd.adapted processing strategies to industrially hot-dip galvanize such high alloyed steel concepts have successfully been developed and implemented in theContinuous Galvanizing Lines (CGL).These challenges with regard to reactive wetting of modern steel concepts and customized solutions like dew-point control and pre-oxidation are presented.In terms of a complete product portfolio providing steel grades for all parts for automotive appliance,the second focus area is in the field of producing steels with excellent forming characteristics and premium quality surfaces for exposed automobile parts.Therefore the scope of development possibilities and potential prospective products are presented.
