Performance-based Fire Safety Design for Long Road Tunnels
Fires in long road tunnels are dangerous.Tunnel fire behaviors are unique, forming generally a two-directional path for smoke movement and fire spread. The heat release rate may exceed 100 MW.Additionally, tunnel users usually are not familiar with the tunnel environment.Long road ttmnels are often constructed in mountainous areas, and far from fire brigade. This paper gives an overview of the road tunnel fire research, both experimental and theoretical work, and notices the challenges of numerical simulation. The design of ventilation and use of water system are underpinned, not only because they are commonly used but they may cause harmful effect for evacuees. The integration and time to activate the two systems are consequently crucial.
