Study on the Effects of Activation Time on Window Glass Protection with Water Mist Curtain under a Fire Scenario

The protection effect of water mist curtain (WMC) on the float glass is alterative with the different time to act WMC.Improper activation of the sprinkler or the cold water sprayed from the fire-fighting lance may accelerate the crack even fallout of the heated glass when encounter a fire.Twenty five tests were conducted to investigate the optimum time to act WMC in this study. The effect of activation time on 6 mm float glass protection with WMC had been studied. The results illustrate that the cracking of the float glass is not accelerated when the temperature of the glass surface outnumbered to that of acting WMC system.Delaying acting WMC has no influence on fire protection of the window glass pane. The optimum time to act WMC is the time that when the maximum temperature of the glass pane is priors to critical breaking temperature. It is also found that delaying acting the water film may not accelerate the crack but the protecting efficiency of WMC becomes poorer. Its initial breakage time decreases from 600 s to 525 s when acting the water film at the maximum temperature of the glass pane of 90 ℃ (145 s after ignition). Therefore, it is optimum to act the water film at the beginning of the fire.
