Hydrogen Mitigation Experiment with HYMIT Facility

Hydrogen will be released to the nuclear power plant containment atmosphere in a reactor core melt accident, and the potential hydrogen explosion need to be mitigated by all efforts. The current hydrogen management strategy in pressurized water reactors (PWR) is to keep the hydrogen concentration low using passive autocatalytic recombiner (PAR) when the concentration is less than the ignition limit (~4 vol.%), and prevent detonation with slow combustion using ignitor.A midsize Hydrogen Mitigation Test facility (HYM1T) is setup to study the hydrogen behavior and mitigation efficiency of PAR and ignitor, and influence of containment environment ingrediem such as steam, water spray and aerosols is also considered. The main component of HYMIT is a steel cylinder tank which is 4 meters high and 2 meters in diameter. The tank volume is about 12 m3.The mixed gas content, gas temperature and pressure and speed of flame can be measured with gas analyzer, thermocouple array, piezoelectric pressure sensors and photodiode array. It can deal with hydrogen concentrations between 0 and 30 vol.%, as well as steam concentrations between 0 and 50 vol.%.The current tests confirms a flame speed around 10m/s with hydrogen concentration less than 13 vol.%.
