Study of the Cause for the Variation of Flash Point After the Ionic Liquids Being Heated
The ionic liquids (Ils) have characteristics of extremely low vapor pressure, high thermal stability and low volatility. It has also been verified to replace traditional volatile organic solvents used in industrials, and has widely potential applications in many areas. In the past, the ionic liquids were thought to be no vapor pressure and flammability, however, recently researches shows that it is flammable. This study used Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA),Simultaneous Thermal Analysis (TGA/DSC) and accessories of Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR-ATR) to measure the thermal stability of 1-hexyll-3methylimidazolium chloride (C6mimC1).In order to simulate the situation of ionic liquid used in high temperature in industry process, the method of isothermal thermogravimetry and dynamic thermogravimetry of TGA and TGA/DSC were used. The results shows the flash point of heated C6mimCl is lower than that of unheated one, and its related to its decomposition rate.Since heated C6mimCl have greater decomposition rate, its gas phase concentration of flammable gases is greater than that of unheated C6mimCl.Thats the reason why it causes the decrease of the flash point.Realizing the cause of flammability for of ionic liquid can helps to prevention the fire and explosion hazard, and to apply in process safety design and hazard reduction.
