Using Thermal Analysis with Kinetic Calculation Method to Assess the Thermal Stability of Azobisisobutyronitrile and Azobisdimethylvaleronitrile

  Azo compounds are usually used as initiators and blowing agents.They are also typically self-reactive materials which are capable of undergoing runaway reaction during storage or transportation, possibly causing serious rims and explosions.To ensure thermal safety of azo compounds in the process,transportation, and storage, two common azo initiators, (AIBN) and azobisdimethylvaleronitrile (ADVN), were selected to be investigated.First, thermal decomposition characteristics under non-isothermal and adiabatic conditions of AIBN and ADVN were obtained by using differential scanning calorimetry from the literature.Second, the collected data were input into Advanced Kinetics and Technology Software (AKTS) to evaluate the basic thermal hazard for both azoes.In addition, based on Semenov theoretical models and thermokinetic parameters, the critical ignition temperature (TC) was extrapolated for consideration of surroundings temperature under cooling system (Ta).The results show that the TCI is all less than 80.0 ℃.Therefore, it is essential to avoid the temperature beyond the TCI or cooling system failure.
