Numerical Study on Hydrogen Explosion due to Leakage from a Car inside a Garage

  Hydrogen is proposed as clean fuel for vehicles all over the world.However, hydrogen leakageduring repair and maintenance in garages is very hazardous.The presence of an ignition source at locations with appropriate mixing ratio can give explosions.In this article, explosion hazards of hydrogen leaked from a car in a garage will be studied numerically by Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using the software FLameACceleration Simulator (FLACS).An example garage with a rolling door as the entrance was considered.A gap was allowed under the rolling door with different height.Dispersion of hydrogen leaking from the car was studied first.Four different possible ignition positions at different heights were assigned to study the explosion of hydrogen after leaking out for 300 s, 600 s and 900 s.Overpressure and temperature resulted from explosions were predicted.A total number of 11 simulations classified into 3 groups were studied.Results indicated that explosion protection measures should be provided to give safe garages.Detectors should be installed to activate the forced ventilation system for reducing the hydrogen concentration inside the garage.
