Bionic Stab Resistance Body Armor Manufactured Using 3D Printing Technology
Stab resistance body armor is a defensive equipment to protect body from stabbing.The existed stab resistance body armor (SRBA) shows low wear-ability since it is heavy and not flexible, which is due to the limited selection in the manufacturing technology, material and structure design.This paper designed a structured stab-resistance layer inspired by the model of crocodile scute and manufactured using 3D Printing technology-laser sintering (LS).Flat plate and structured plate were sintered using pure polyamide powder and polyamide/multi-walled nanotubes composite, and the stab resistance properties of two kinds of stab plate were compared and analyzed based on the national standard GA68-2008.It is found that the stab resistance property of flat plates sintered by polyamide powder and polyamide/MWNT are both weaker than that of the structured plate.The penetration depth of polyamide/MWNT structured plate is significantly 2-mm-less than the pure polyamide structured plate.It is concluded that the stab resistance properties of PA/MWNT plate is better than pure polyamide plate.Using PA/MWNT structured plate to produce the stub resistance body armor would result in a weight reduce about 30%-40% comparing with existed SRBA, which could largely reduce the wearer workload and improve wearing frequency and efficiency.
