1 Introduction Continuous casting is the most widely used process in the world for transforming liquid steel to the solid state.According to estimates, around 90％ of the worlds steel is currently produced using the continuous casting process.In Germany the process accounts for a 98％ share 1.Ingot casting, in which steel was poured into permanent molds (gravity dies)and which used to be the predominant method, has lost its importance.This is now mainly used only where large blocks of steel are required which are then processed further by forging 2.
