Morphology Evolution of Industrial Alumina Powder after Firing at Different Temperatures

This work is aimed at studying the evolution of the morphology of industrial alumina powder after firing at 700-1800℃.Industrial alumina powder is composed of larger particles which are agglomerated by small hexagonal prism particles. After firing at 700, 800℃ and 900℃, the microstructure of alumina is not changed However, irregular grains begin to appear on the surface of the particles, and the boundaries between the grains are observable at 1000℃.With the increase of firing temperature, the grains separated from each other, the gaps between the grains increase, and the grains gradually grow. The grains become spherical and elliptical, and continue to grow at 1400℃.The spherical and elliptical grains form sintering neck at 1600 ℃.The alumina samples are not densification, and the grains do not continue to grow at 1700℃ and 1800 ℃.
