Properties and Applications of Andalusite Based Refractories and the Influence of Mineral Impurities on the Behaviour of Refractories Made Thereof

  Andalusite is a natural mineral widely used as raw material for different applications.Due to its very specific properties andalusite is also very attractive as aggregate for refractory castables and bricks.It is well known that andalusite based refractories exhibit a high volume and thermal stability;high density and a particularly high thermal shock resistance.Nevertheless, the performances of refractories, based on this alumino-silicate depend-besides others-on the chemical composition which in turn is mainly influenced by the amount and type of accompanying minerals (depending on the deposits) and the thoroughness as well as the method of processing (e.g.magnetic separation, heavy media separation, floatation,electrostatic separation).This paper presents the results of a study comparing the performance of different types of andalusite raw materials.A broad range of andalusite was characterized regarding chemical and mineralogical composition as well as dilatometry and heating microscopy.Specific attention was given to the distribution of impurities across the different size fractions.Refractory bricks and castables were produced from each type of andalusite in a laboratory scale in order to establish a correlation between the raw material purity and the refractory performance.Thermo-mechanical properties such as refractoriness under load and creep resistance were investigated, with a particular focus on the impact of impurity level, its enrichment in the matrix and its influence on the microstructure.
