Template Formation of Zinc Aluminate Micro-platelets from Molten Salt

Zinc aluminate (ZnAl2O4) micro-platelets were synthesized by reacting equimolar ZnO and a-Al2O3 micro-platelets in a molten alkaline chloride (NaCl or KCl) or sodium sulphate salt at a relatively low temperature.ZnAl2O4 started to form at 800℃ and its amount increased with temperature rising whereas those of ZnO and Al2O3 decreased.KCl was found to be the most effective in accelerating the ZnAl2O4 formation among the three salts.Phase pure ZnAl2O4 micro-platelets were prepared after 3 h firing at 1100 ℃ in KCl or at 1200 ℃ in NaCl or Na2SO4.They, to a large extent, inherited morphologies and sizes of the original a-Al2O3 micro-platelets, indicating that a template formation mechanism dominated the molten salt synthesis process.
