Investigation on Properties and Microtructures of Bauxite-based Mullite Grogs with 60% Al2O3

  With an increase of bauxite resource utilization rate of China, as one of the important refractory raw materials, synthetic bauxite-based homogenized grogs have been widely used in refractory industry duo to their uniform microstructure and excellent high temperature properties.In this paper, the microstructures and phase compositions of the homogenized mullite raw material with Al2O3 content of 60% (M60) have been studied by SEM, OM and XRD.The porosity, pore size distribution, crystal structures of the M60 have been analyzed by optical microscopic observation.The results show that the M60 homogenized grogs have the following characteristics: well-developed mullite crystal,uniform crystal distribution of showing network structure, less amount of glass phase, higher refractoriness under load and a lot of closed-pores with micro-size in the raw material.These characteristics and properties will help to improve high temperature properties of refractories, in especial thermal shock resistance.Thus, it may be predicted that the homogenized mullite raw material with micro-pores will be widely used for high quality refractory manufactures.
