Role of Sodium Silicate in Formation of Magnesium Silicate Hydrate (M-S-H) for Magnesia Based Castables

The activation performance of sodium silicate additive in the formation of M-S-H gels in MgO-SiO2 slurries and magnesia castables was evaluated by means of inductive couple plasma, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric measurement, FT-IR spectrometer.Based on the thermodynamic calculation, the increase in ions concentration can promote the formation of M-S-H gels in MgO-SiO2-H2O system. The results showed that sodium silicate additive enhanced the level of silicate ion concentration in this system and accelerated the dissolution of microsilica. As a result, the formation of M-S-H phases was promoted in MgO-SiO2 slurries in the presence of sodium silicate additive. The magnesia castables bonded by microsilica with addition of sodium silicate had better strength than ones without the addition.
