The Influence of Alumina Powders on the Volume Stability of Corundum-based Castables
Two kinds of micro-sized alumina powders were used in corundum-based castables with calcium aluminate cement (CAC) as binder. The effect of two kinds of alumina powders on permanent linear change, apparent porosity and cold-crushing strength of the castable after demoulding and heating treatment at 110 ℃, 1 100 and 1 500 ℃ was investigated. The results indicated that the size of alumina powder affects the particle size and distribution of the hydrates of cement in the matrix, which in turn affects the particle size and distribution of CA6 after firing at 1 500 ℃.Moreover, the volumetric stability of the castables was influenced by the particle size and distribution of CA6 as the volume expansion accompanying the formation of CA6 is related to the sizes of CA6.
