Chemical Corrosion of Dense Al2O3 by ZnO-containing Fayalite Slags
Fayalite slags with different ZnO levels can be generated in secondary copper smelters as feeding materials may contain Zn or ZnO.For the furnace linings, Al2O3-based refractories are potential alternatives for magnesia-chromite refractories as they do not suffer from the possible formation of hazardous Cr6+ containing phases. Therefore, the chemical corrosion of Al2O3 by ZnO-containing fayalite slags was investigated in this work by Al2O3 crucible tests at 1200 ℃ for 4 h under Ar atmosphere. The influence of the ZnO level, FeO/SiO2 ratio and CaO/SiO2 ratio of the slag on the Al2O3 dissolution and the Al2O3/slag interracial reactions was studied. The microstructure of the corroded Al2O3 crucibles and the slag composition were analyzed by electron probe micro-analysis equipped with a wavelength dispersive spectroscope (EPMA-WDS).The experimental results from the crucible tests were interpreted by thermodynamic calculations.
