Effect of Raw Materials Particle Size on the Formation of Mullite by Solid State Reaction
M-47 mullite was synthesized by solid phase reaction of Suzhou low-grade kaolin and industrial alumina at 1600℃.The effect of particle size of raw materials on mullite formation was investigated.Particle diameter was measured with laser particle size analyzer and phase structure of the products was examined with XR D.It was showed that the particle size and distribution of raw materials remained unchanged approximately with grinding time over 25h.The content of synthetic mullite phase, with the bulk density of 2.63g/cm3 and porosity of 2.6%,reached 91% in the synthetic product after 25h grinding of raw materials.By adding 0.5% calgon as a dispersant and grinding the raw materials for 25h,a better synthetic mullite was obtained with the porosity of 1.8% and bulk density of 2.65 g/cm3.
