The Effect of Silica Fume on Performance of High Alumina Castable

  High alumina castable was prepared using homogenized aggregate (Al2O3 70%), activated aluminium oxide micropowder and Elken silica fume (SiO2 95%) as raw materials with Secar71 cement as the binder.The effect of silica fume content (3wt%-l8wt%) on normal and fired performance of the high alumina castables was investigated according to YB/T 5201-1993 and GB/T 18301-2012 criterion.The results showed that apparent porosity of the castables decreased with addition of 9-12 wt% silica fume and the room temperature and sintered strength were improved, whereas deteriorated performance of the castables was observed with an adding amount exceeding 12 wt%.The best abrasion resistance was obtained with 6% silica fume.The castable displayed an optimum suitability for construction under room temperature with silica fume content of 6-12wt%.
