Theoretical and experimental studies on the steady-state resonant water waves

In 1960 Phillips found the resonance criterion of four waves, and reported that the amplitude of resonant wave component, if it is initially zero, increases linearly with time.In 1962 Benney gave a wave model which indicates that there exist periodic exchanges of wave energy between different wave modes, when wave resonance occurs. However, it is failed to find the steady-state resonant waves whose wave spectrum is independent of time, since perturbation techniques break down due to the singularity for the resonant waves.Using the homotopy analysis method (HAM), an analytic approximation method for highly nonlinear problems, the steady-state resonant water waves were found in deep water and in water of finite depth.Besides, they were confirmed by experiments in State Key Lab of Ocean Engineering, China. These works illustrate the originality and potential of the homotopy analysis method (HAM), and besides deepen our understandings on resonant water waves.
