Influence of compressibility on wave impact pressures and scaling investigation
The effects of gas compressibility and scaling on the dynamics of wave impact, associated with water wave impact on structures, are studied in this paper.A one-dimensional vertical liquid piston compressing a gas pocket is first chosen to aid in understanding the impact phenomena.Theoretical and numerical analyses are performed for this problem. Then a two-dimensional free falling liquid jet within a rectangular tank filled with gas is further chosen to investigate, via numerical methods, liquid impact on the rigid bottom of the tank.It is confirmed that when gas effects are important, Froude law is no longer valid for scaling up impact pressure from model scale to full-scale.Depending on the different types of impact, Froude scaling may lead to underestimation of impact maxima, which is opposite to wave impact on a vertical wall.
