Experimental study on turbulent flow in open channel with submerged flexible vegetation

A large number of experimental studies on submerged vegetation flow are based on a rigid vegetation model. However, flow over submerged flexible vegetation canopies is ubiquitous in most natural rivers. This study considered the effect of flexible vegetation.Three experiments were performed in channel flows with submerged flexible vegetation using acoustic Doppler velocimetry.Velocity profiles were measured in the longitudinal direction to examine the structure of coherent vortices and the characteristics of momentum transport in shallow vegetated flows. The vertical profile of streamwise velocity presents an S shape, and an inflection-point appears below the canopy edge. Thus, the coherent vortex structure is produced near the top of the canopy, and momentum transfer is achieved via sweep and ejection events at a specific frequency.
