Simulation of surf zone wave breaking using extended shallow water equations with non-hydrostatic pressure

In this paper, a 3D non-hydrostatic model extended from the non-linear shallow water equations is developed to simulate non-linear water wave motions. The numerical model solved by the finite volume method (FVM) is capable to simulate shock waves by adopting a 2nd order TVD numerical scheme. In surf zone, the wave breaking is handled by means of a splitting strategy, i.e.the model being switched from the non-hydrostatic mode to hydrostatic mode in the extent of the broken wave front. It is of valuable concern that the shallow water equations with the shock-capturing numerical features enable an intrinsic representation of wave breaking by suppressing the dispersive tenn. The present numerical model was used to simulate the surf zone wave breaking, and was validated by a series of experimental study cases.
