Numerical study of smooth profile method in simulating fluid-structure interaction problems
In this paper, we propose a partitioned approach in simulating a classical FSI problem, vortex-induced vibration of cylinders. For the fluid part, smooth profile method (SPM) in the framework of NEKTAR is adopted to simulate the flow. For the structure part, an elastic-mounted rigid cylinder is considered in 2D simulations, while a flexible cylinder with Euler tension beam model is used in 3D simulations. The numerical experiments indicate that the vibration responses and induced forces on cylinder from SPM solver are very consistent with those from NEKTAR-ALE solver or NEKTAR-Fourier solver.
