Numerical investigation of evolution of free-surface and sub-surface vortices in pump sump based on LES
In this work, a numerical model based on LES is built to simulate the free-surface and sub-surface vortices in pump sump.A systematic analysis on validation of the LES model is done and the results are compared with the published experiment with respect to the transient flow feature and vorticity profile.A particular interest lays in the formation and evolution of free-surface and floor-attached vortices.The vorticity transport process in the presence of floor-attached vortex is revealed using the vorticity equation.The findings provide a deep insight in the application of LES in pump sump and the mechanism of vortex formation and evolution in the sump.
