Extreme wind loading prediction of a 2MW horizontal-axis wind turbine

Severe wind turbine failures were reported during several heavy typhoons recently invading Taiwan. The extreme wind condition of these tropical storms is generally characterized by a very high wind speed accompanied by a strong flow turbulence as well as a rapid change of wind course. The significant aerodynamic loading under these unusual wind conditions can bring a partial breakdown, even a full failure, to structures or machinery, whereas a wind turbine can no longer operate with any allowable safety requirement afterwards. In this study, the aerodynamic loadings, such as the pitch moment of blade, the yaw moment of nacelle, the axial moment of rotor and the overturning moment of tower, under typical typhoon conditions in Taiwan are numerically predicted with the help of flow simulation around a target wind turbine. The scope of this paper is to suggest a design criterion of the pitch, axial, overturning and yaw moments for the target wind turbine as well as to recommend basic safety requirements for its operation in Taiwan.
