Study on ship roll damping
Numerical simulations of the free roll decay have been carried out for the DTMB 5512 with/without bilge keels based on computational fluid dynamics by adopting the overset mesh technology.Free roll decay curve from numerical simulation coincides quite well with that from experiment given Fr=0.138, and initial roll angle θ0 =10°, the natural period and the roll damping of the ship are well predicted. Moreover, the influences of bilge keel width, initial roll angle and speed on roll damping are discussed, respectively.Besides, numerical simulations of forced roll have been performed for a trimaran to explore the influence of frequency on roll damping. The results show that the roll damping increases with bilge keel width, initial roll angle, speed and frequency.
