Experimental investigation on the singing vortex for an elliptical hydrofoil

  Tip vortex cavitation is a complex problem in marine propellers and has drawn considerable attention.The singing vortex is a special phenomenon related to a periodical oscillation of the developed tip vortex cavitation and the physical mechanism leading to it is still unclear.In this paper, an experimental investigation on the singing vortex was carried out.The dynamics and sound signature of the singing vortex were studied.Moreover, the relationship between the singing vortex and the flow features such as flow velocity, attack angle was investigated.It is found that the tone frequency of the singing vortex varies with the flow velocity in an approximately linear fashion while an inverse relationship exists between the tone frequency and the attack angle.
