Numerical and experiment research on the direct stability assessment criteria under dead ship condition in rough seas
The methods to be used for direct stability assessment of stability under dead ship condition are now under development by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in the Second Generation Intact Stability Criteria.Model experiments and simulations are done to promote a reliable numerical method for predicting stability under dead ship condition.Firstly, a 3DOF roll mathematical model is used to calculating roll motion in irregular beam waves and steady wind.Secondly, roll amplitudes are compared in experiments and simulations and roll motion amplitudes in regular waves shows obvious nonlinearity as the wave height is bigger, which showed conspicuously different from the linear results of 1 DOF.Finally, The maximum roll angles are compared in experiments and simulations in irregular waves. It confirmed that capsizing could be calculated using the 3 DOF nonlinear mathematical model and the roll time history curves display stochastic characteristic regardless of capsizing happen or not,but regular statistics characteristic in the large asmple stochastic events.
