A modeling study of hydrodynamics at submarine pipelines in tidal currents

A high-fidelity modeling study is presented for flows at pipelines laid on bottom of tidal currents. The modeling is made using a recently developed, unique, multiphysics modeling system, which is an integration of the Solver for Incompressible Flow on Overset Meshes (SIFOM) and the Finite Volume Coastal Ocean Model (FVCOM).The SIFO-FVCOM system is applied to simulate such flows in a flume as well as a realistic estuary. The study reveals basic features of the flow structures, and it extracts a formula to estimate of hydrodynamic loads on subsea pipelines in engineering problems.
