Settling velocity of non-spherical hydrochorous seeds

  Experimental data from the published literature have been collected in a wide range of particle Reynolds numbers (0.03~10000) to develop empirical formulae for drag coefficient and settling velocity of non-spherical particles.Compared with other models, the newly presented formulae predict more accurately the settling velocity of irregular particles.Besides, settling velocities of 3 types of hydrochorous seeds collected from the Poyang Lake were measured in the laboratory, and the result shows that the empirical formulae can be applied to non-spherical granular hydrochorous seeds and enrich the study on the dynamics pattern of hydrochory.
